Schlein: "The Mamdani tax? Yes to an EU-wide tax on millionaires."

The Mamdani tax, a mini-wealth tax, on super-billionaires? "This is an issue we've already addressed when we declared ourselves in favor of a Europe-wide tax on people with millions at their disposal, on billionaires," said Democratic Party secretary Elly Schlein during the event at the Temple of Hadrian.

In the joint motion submitted with the opposition, the Democratic Party leader continues, "there is a real tax on extra profits, not just on banks but also on energy and defense companies. We support a Europe-wide tax on people with millions at their disposal, on billionaires."

Schlein therefore agrees with a Mamdani tax on the wealthy in Italy too: "No worries, but capital travels faster than people. We're not shying away from it, but we need the right tools," he adds.

A few days before the elections, the young, newly elected mayor of New York had explained his rationale to Repubblica : "I am committed to ensuring that the cost of living in our city is sustainable, so that everyone can continue to make their extraordinary contribution, without risking being expelled from an economy that favors only the richest."
